Valve has opened up the beta of the Portal 2 Authoring Tools for everyone to get their hands on.
The beta tools are available as a free download for owners of the PC version of Portal 2 and can be accessed through the 'Tools' tab in Steam.
According to a blog post on the official Portal 2 site, the tools include a version of those Valve used to make the game. They'll allow creators to design their own singleplayer and co-op maps, character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music.
Here are all the details:
Updated version of Hammer, the Source level editor
Updated Faceposer
Example maps and instances to help build new maps
Updated suite of command-line compiling utilities
Last month Valve detailed the first Portal 2 DLC pack. Introducing new chambers, challenge mode and more for free, it'll be out this summer.
